Avalanche is an open-source platform for launching highly decentralized applications, new financial primitives, and new interoperable blockchains.

Avalanche was designed to be customizable, scalable, and interoperable.

Everything on Avalanche is a subnet, and every chain is part of a subnet.

Validators are required to be a member of the Default Subnet and all other subnets are optional, depending on the validator.

Subnets (short for “sub-network”) are a dynamic set of validators working together to achieve consensus on the state of a set of Blockchains.

Subnets are required to create custom incentive mechanisms for these validators.

A Subnet is a set of validators.

A Subnet validates a set of Blockchains.

Each Blockchain is validated by exactly one Subnet, which is specified on Blockchain creation.

Subnets are a powerful primitive that allow Blockchains to have custom validator sets, which means one can create permissioned Blockchains.

One of the core features of the Avalanche network is the ability to create new Blockchains. Avalanche currently supports creation of new instances of the AVM (the Virtual Machine the X-Chain runs) and the Timestamp VM.

Every Blockchain is validated by a Subnet.

Before you can create a Blockchain, you’ll need a Subnet to validate it.

The Default Subnet contains three Blockchains:

Platform Chain (P)

The P-Chain is the metadata chain on Avalanche and coordinates validators, keeps track of active subnets, and allows for the creation of new subnets.

The Platform Chain implements the Snowman consensus protocol powered by Avalanche.

Exchange Chain (X)

The X-Chain is the default asset chain on Avalanche and enables the creation of new assets, exchanging between assets, and cross-subnet transfers.

The Exchange Chain implements the Avalanche consensus protocol.

Contracts Chain (C)

The Contract Chain is the default smart contract chain on Avalanche and enables the creation of any Ethereum-compatible smart contracts.

The Contract Chain implements the Snowman consensus protocol powered by Avalanche.
